The people were united, but their unity was centered upon human ambition, self-exaltation, and independence from God. Their declaration, “let us make us a name” (Genesis 11:4), reveals the danger of pursuing greatness outside of God's purpose.
The workbook then follows the dramatic contrast within the chapter. While mankind was attempting to make a name for themselves, God was quietly preserving a lineage through which His covenant purposes would continue. Generation after generation—from Shem through Arphaxad, Salah, Eber, Peleg, Reu, Serug, Nahor, and Terah—the biblical record moves toward the introduction of Abram, whom God would call in Genesis Chapter 12.
