The Jebusites

Joshua 18:28 And Zelah (Palestine), Eleph (Palestine), and Jebusi, which is Jerusalem, Gibeath, and Kirjath; fourteen cities with their villages. This is the inheritance of the children of Benjamin according to their families.

According to the biblical Table of Nations in Genesis 10, the people later associated with the land of Philistia (the Philistines) are traced through Ham, one of Noah's three sons.

The genealogy is:

Noah→ Ham→ Mizraim (traditionally associated with Egypt)→ Casluhim→ Philistim (Philistines)

Genesis 10:13-14 (KJV) says:

"And Mizraim begat Ludim, and Anamim, and Lehabim, and Naphtuhim,And Pathrusim, and Casluhim, (out of whom came Philistim,) and Caphtorim."

Thus, the Philistines are presented as descendants of Ham through Mizraim.

Philistines and Palestinians

It is important to distinguish between:

• Philistines — an ancient people living along the southern coastal region of Canaan during the time of Samson, Saul, and David.

• Palestinians — a modern Arab people whose ancestry is complex and includes many populations that have lived in the region over centuries.

The name "Palestine" is related linguistically to "Philistia," but modern Palestinians are not simply the direct descendants of the ancient Philistines. Historians generally view Palestinian ancestry as a mixture of many peoples who lived in the land over thousands of years, including ancient Canaanite populations, Arabs, Greeks, Romans, and others.

So, according to Genesis 10, the Philistines descended from Ham through Mizraim. The Bible does not specifically trace the ancestry of modern Palestinians.

Joshua 15:63 As for the Jebusites ( son of Canaan, son of Ham, son of Noah) the inhabitants of Jerusalem, the children of Judah could not drive them out: but the Jebusites dwell with the children of Judah at Jerusalem unto this day.

Judges 1:8 Now the children of Judah had fought against Jerusalem, and had taken it, and smitten it with the edge of the sword, and set the city on fire.

Judges 1:9 ¶ And afterward the children of Judah went down to fight against the Canaanites, (the descendants of Ham) that dwelt in the mountain, and in the south, and in the valley.

Judges 1:10 And Judah went against the Canaanites that dwelt in Hebron: (now the name of Hebron before was Kirjatharba:) and they slew Sheshai, and Ahiman, and Talmai.

Judges 1:21 ¶ And the children of Benjamin did not drive out the Jebusites that inhabited Jerusalem; but the Jebusites dwell with the children of Benjamin in Jerusalem unto this day.
