How the Sons of God Produced Children from the Daughters of Men

The passage you are referring to is Genesis 6:1–4, where it says the “sons of God” took wives from the “daughters of men,” and the Nephilim were on the earth in those days. This has been interpreted in several major ways throughout history.

1. The Ancient Jewish / Enochic View

This is the oldest interpretation found in texts like the Book of Enoch and many early Jewish writings.

According to this view:

  • The “sons of God” were fallen angels (often called Watchers).

  • They left their proper heavenly position.

  • They took human women.

  • Their union produced giant or mighty offspring called Nephilim.

This interpretation is often connected to:

  • Genesis 6:1–4

  • Book of Jude 1:6–7

  • Second Epistle of Peter 2:4–5

Why people connect these passages

Jude says certain angels:

  • “left their own habitation”

  • committed sexual immorality

  • are now reserved in chains of darkness.

Peter also speaks about angels that sinned in the days of Noah.

Because of this, many ancient interpreters believed Genesis 6 describes angelic rebellion before the flood.

But How Could Angels Have Children?

This is where the debate begins.

Jesus said angels do not marry

In Gospel of Matthew 22:30, Jesus said:

“In the resurrection they neither marry nor are given in marriage, but are like the angels of heaven.”

Many use this verse to argue angels cannot reproduce.

However, supporters of the fallen angel view answer:

  • Jesus said the holy angels in heaven do not marry.

  • Genesis 6 concerns fallen angels acting against God’s order.

  • Angels in scripture sometimes appear physically as men:

    • the visitors to Abraham in Genesis 18

    • the angels in Sodom in Genesis 19

So they argue fallen angels may have taken physical form.

Ethiopian and Geʽez Tradition

The Ethiopian tradition strongly preserves the angelic interpretation because the Book of Enoch is included in the Ethiopian biblical tradition.

In Ethiopian commentary traditions:

  • the Watchers descended on Mount Hermon,

  • corrupted mankind,

  • taught forbidden knowledge,

  • and produced violent hybrid offspring.

This corruption is seen as one reason for the flood judgment.

The Geʽez tradition often emphasizes:

  • corruption of creation,

  • unlawful mixture,

  • rebellion against heavenly order,

  • and violence filling the earth.

2. The Sethite Interpretation (Another Major View)

Many later Christian interpreters rejected the angelic interpretation.

They taught:

  • “sons of God” = descendants of Seth (the godly line)

  • “daughters of men” = descendants of Cain (ungodly line)

In this interpretation:

  • the sin was intermarriage between righteous and wicked people,

  • not angels mating with humans.

This became popular especially in later Western Christianity because many theologians struggled with the idea of angels reproducing physically.

3. Royal Tyrant / Kings Interpretation

Another interpretation says:

  • “sons of God” refers to ancient rulers or kings,

  • who took women by force,

  • producing violent warrior dynasties.

This view focuses on human corruption and tyranny before the flood.

Important Theological Question

The Bible never fully explains the biological mechanism.

So anyone claiming absolute certainty goes beyond the text.

The core point of Genesis 6 is:

  • humanity became deeply corrupted,

  • violence filled the earth,

  • boundaries established by God were violated,

  • and judgment came through the flood.

Why This Passage Matters Biblically

Genesis 6 becomes a foundation for later biblical themes:

  • spiritual rebellion,

  • corruption of creation,

  • violence and wickedness,

  • judgment and cleansing,

  • and preservation through Noah.

Many connect this to:

  • Noah as a preserver of righteousness,

  • Christ as the final redeemer,

  • and restoration of God’s original order.

Galatians 3:13 is sometimes connected here: Christ became a curse for us to reverse the curse and corruption brought through rebellion.
